/UFO cinemas - prototype
location: Prototype in Panvel, Mumbai. Model replicated across small towns in India
area: 1200 sq m
UFO Cinemas is a pioneer in digital screening in small towns across India. The design for a theatre prototype is left flexible enough to accommodate various dynamic, context specific parameters, across different sites. The design also had to signify the paradigm shift in the cinematic experience and technology, yet retain an aspirational image of a small town cinema hall.
To meet the demands and challenges of commercial viability in smaller towns across India, the design and execution is simplified to the bare essentials. Through a compact plan organization, simple circulation and a bare roof structure on load bearing walls, the resources are optimised. Certain features inherent to the town life are integrated, like the high plinth that is also a forecourt for the crowd to ‘hang out’ at, and the quintessential galla (shop) near the booking window. Programmatic features such as a snack bar, ATM and canteen adds to the commercial viability of the place along with adding to the facilities in a conventional small town cinema hall. The distinguishable sectional profile, and the front façade, is a deliberate act to make the architecture an identifiable visual symbol for the brand of theatres.
