The narrow plot with a shared wall on the north was a prime determinant for the massing and eventual spatial decisions for this residence. A home for an engineer’s joint family, the house is planned out as a single bay sequentially lodging activities in a simple form, with only the entrance and the green court on the south doubling up the bay. The north, with the common wall, is opened up for light and ventilation, in a series of favourably placed skylights. The central volume with the staircase and interspersed double and triple volumes is visualised as an interactive volume for the vertically stacked functions in this narrow house.
